Liquid Embolic Agents
Onyx Liquid Embolic System
Indications for Use
Presurgical embolization of brain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs).
Key Specifications
- Non-adhesive liquid embolic agent comprised of EVOH (ethylene vinyl alcohol) copolymer dissolved in DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide)
- Suspended micronized tantalum powder for fluoroscopic visualization
- Consists of 1.5 ml vial of Onyx, 1.5 ml vial of DMSO, and three 1 ml Onyx delivery syringes
- Requires DMSO-compatible delivery micro catheter (e.g., Marathon, Rebar, or UltraFlow HPC catheters) for neurovascular access
- Available in two formulations: Onyx 18 (6% EVOH) and Onyx 34 (8% EVOH)
- Onyx 18 has lower viscosity, travels more distally and penetrates deeper into the nidus
- Onyx 34 recommended for higher flow and larger fistulous components
- Nominal viscosity of Onyx 18: 18 cSt at 40°C
- Nominal viscosity of Onyx 34: 33 cSt at 40°C
- Final solidification occurs within five minutes for both formulations
- Delivered by slow controlled injection at recommended rate of 0.16 ml/min (not exceeding 0.3 ml/min)
- DMSO dissipates into blood, precipitating EVOH copolymer and tantalum into a spongy, coherent embolus
- Solidifies from outside to inside, forming a skin while traveling distally
- Single use only; sterile (dry heat) and non-pyrogenic for Onyx and DMSO; sterile EO for syringes
- Storage: -20°C to 55°C; prior to use: 19°C to 24°C
- Shake Onyx for at least 20 minutes on mixer at setting 8 for adequate tantalum suspension
Description
Onyx is a non-adhesive liquid embolic agent comprised of EVOH (ethylene vinyl alcohol) copolymer dissolved in DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide), and suspended micronized tantalum powder to provide contrast for visualization under fluoroscopy. The Onyx Liquid Embolic System consists of a 1.5 ml vial of Onyx, a 1.5 ml vial of DMSO, and three 1 ml Onyx delivery syringes. A DMSO compatible delivery micro catheter indicated for use in the neurovasculature (e.g., Marathon, Rebar or UltraFlow HPC catheters) is used to access the embolization site. Onyx is available in two product formulations, Onyx 18 (6% EVOH) and Onyx 34 (8% EVOH), with Onyx 18 having lower viscosity for deeper penetration. Final solidification occurs within five minutes for both formulations.
